oh THAT is what that noise is!
we'd sort of assumed it was a frog since we couldn't find what was making it.
also the barred owls nested in yard again this year, so we got to see the owlet.
The owlet hadn’t quite mastered flying yet, so was pottering around the backyard in the sea of ferns, doing its best E.T. impression. Occasionally it managed to hop up on something and beat its wings furiously, but couldn't quite manage takeoff.
I took this photos leaning out the window as the parents were sitting in trees overhead and made angry beak snapping noises if you went in backyard.
Our cat came around corner shortly after I took this and went “BIRD!” and came running up… and then went running off when owlet puffed up, hissed, and snapped at it. Owlet is almost as big as the cat. Parent owls also made a racket, so the cat decided he really wanted to be inside. Yes, thank you, I do not wish to be stuck outside with the angry raptors…
